CONSEQUENCES OF POOR PACKAGING IN INTERNATIONAL TRANSPORT

by | Thu 27 Jun ,2024 | National Registry of Cargo Dispatch RNDC, RNDC, Sin categoría

Poor packaging of goods in an international transport operation coordinated by a freight forwarder can have serious consequences. It is crucial to understand that packaging not only protects the goods during handling, loading, and unloading, but also preserves them in warehouses and storage facilities. Proper preparation and consolidation of packaging are essential to ensure that the goods arrive at their destination in perfect condition.

The Crucial Role of Packaging in the Success of International Transportation

Initially, it is the sender’s responsibility to deliver the goods perfectly packaged and labelled according to the export policies of the country of origin and the nature of the goods. This guarantees their protection throughout the transport process until they arrive in the destination country. However, if the recipient contracts the transport, they will be responsible for ensuring the goods are properly packaged. If not, the carrier and/or freight forwarder must record the condition of the packaging in the transport documents.

Damage to goods due to poor packaging is the direct responsibility of the sender or recipient, as appropriate. However, if the carrier does not record the packaging irregularities when receiving the goods and proceeds with the transport, they will assume responsibility for any damage or loss. This underscores the importance of a thorough inspection before accepting the goods for transport.

THE RESPONSIBILITY REGARDING THE PACKAGING OBLIGATION OF THE MERCHANDISE

The Role of the Freight Forwarder in International Packaging

When the client delegates the task of packaging the goods to the freight forwarder, the latter assumes responsibility for any potential damage or loss. Service orders must include all clear and precise instructions regarding the packaging and special conditions required for the handling and transport of the goods. Proper packaging not only protects the goods but also ensures an efficient and safe transport operation.
